A Guilty Pleasure that G.L.O.W.'s

Earlier today I came into Best Buy with the intent of just buying film for my camera (Yes, I still one of the few who use a 35mm camera), but I succumbed to a guilty pleasures & bought a G.L.O.W. DVD. For those of you who didn’t grow up in the 1980’s or weren’t a dork LOL. The acronym of G.L.O.W. stands for gorgeous ladies of wrestling & it was on television from 1986 to 1990. Back in those days that was my favorite television show & I remember I used to watch it religiously every Friday night @ 6pm & I just could never get enough of it.

The show was very much unlike anything I’ve ever seen. There has never been an all women’s wrestling promotion before & not only did these women wrestle (at least attempt to) the show was filled with all sorts of goofy comedy sketches & musical routines. All in all, it was a very campy show, but I LOVED it. Despite the fact many of my peers & my brother’s friends would tease me for watching it, it was my guilty pleasure.

When the show ended in 1990, I was saddened, but I moved on to other things & forgot about it. The show would become another relic of my childhood or at least until I saw it today at Best Buy. When I saw the DVD, my eyes lit up & it was as if I was 10 years old all over again. I totally forgot what I came in there for & quickly snatched up a copy of the DVD. Instantly 4 years worth of Friday nights came back to me, but then I started to think “how stupid” or “I can’t believe I used to like this stuff”, but my curiosity got the best of me, I succumbed to my guilty pleasure, & I bought myself a copy of “The very best of G.L.O.W Volume 1.”

When I came home, I couldn’t wait to tear into the DVD & watch it. Within that hour, I relived on of my favorite childhood moments & saw many of my favorite lady wrestlers. Although the women weren’t too skilled at the art of wrestling & the singing/acting left little to be desired, it was still nice to see it again & relive one of my fond memories as a child. I do wonder if I will succumb to the same guily plesure if I see volumes 2 or 3?

Garter

Last night I had the pleasure of attending my good friend's wedding with my significant other. For the most part, I had a wonderful time & in a way I'll be a memorable part of the wedding as I was the lucky(?) man to catch the garter.

I've been to weddings before & have witnessed this tradition, but I never really knew what it meant. After a bit of searching online ( & failed attempts using "Wikipdeia.com"), I managed to find the answer at http://www.elegantweddings.ca. According to this stie:

"This ritual dates back to the 14th century; a time when women wore hose attached by a garter belt. Catching the garter (thrown by the groom) was a chance for the single men to share in the good fortune of the groom. Today, it is believed that the man who catches the garter will be the next to marry."

Now knowing that, I can see why all the other guys just kinda sat there & I was the only person who really dove for the garter LOL. I guess that means that I'll be the next to marry? I am currently in a relationship with a wonderful person & I'm not getting any younger so maybe this could be a relaity, but my only real hurdles would be the political aspect & then breaking the news to my family etc...but those are all subjects for a future blog. Right now I'm just going to relish in the fact that I was the infamous garter catcher : )

Kill Him With a Vote & Not With a Gun

While I was reading the Evening Capital, I was shocked when I came across the following headline "Dwyer says motorist pointed gun at him". Although I am no fan of Donald Dwyer or his politics, I don't feel waving a gun at him is the right thing to do & if anything makes a stronger case for him.

For those unfamilar with local politics, Donald Dwyer is a Republican Candidate representing the city of Glen Burnie. He is most known for being strongly against gay rights in the state of MD. For example, the past couple years he has orgainized protests in front of the state house in Annapolis protesting gay marriage & has been trying his best to get the issue of same sex marriage on the ballots for the November elections. Although he was not successful at getting it on the ballot this year, he's very passionate about denying gays rights. Although he trys to sugarcoat his hatred & uses the usual jargen of "wanting to protect the sanctity of marriage", it's very clear how he feels about gays & he obviously is not making any friends with the gay community.

In the article it is mentioned that this was the 2nd time a motorist has flashed a gun at him while he was campaigning on a Glen Burnie overpass. In addition to that, it is mentioned that this was his 5th death threat in four years. Sadly, when one has a political platform based on hatred & predjudice it generates such rash responses from others. Although Mr. Dwyer's views make me angry, it is still a free country & he is allowed to express his views. Just as much as I have the freedom to post this blog about him & this incident. I do feel the motorist is right to not like him, but I think flashing a gun takes things a little bit too far.

If that motorist actually killed Mr. Dwyer, it would most likely make him a martyr for his anti gay cause & possibly rally more support for him & ultimately make gays look bad. Just by waving the gun & having that article written about him can do nothing but give voters sympathy for him & want to possibly vote for him again.

If you really want to hurt Mr. Dwyer, then you should really make it count. Instead of waving a gun or sending death threats, you need to register to vote & make your vote count by NOT voting for him. In addition to that, you need to rally your friends, family, anyone who has the same beliefs as you do & VOTE. Although I don't live in Glen Burnie & I can't really voete for or against him, I'm still going to vote this November (as he has some stooges representing my area) & convice any & all my friends in Glen Burnie not to vote for him. If enough people vote he & his stooges out of office, that will probably be a worse fate than death as he won't be in power to push any more of his anti-gay adgenda.

Let the Music Play

Earlier this week I was complaining about the CD player in my car not working & having to listen to the crappy radio. Well, I managed to get in touch with my friend, Daniel, & he works as a mechanic. He's very experienced & he installed the previous CD player in my car. With his help, I replaced my car stereo & he was able to retrieve my lost CD. No longer do I have to listen to the radio, but instead I can listen to as much Tori Amos, Queen, David Bowie, Morrissey, Cure, Depeche Mode, Bjork, Jill Sobule, Dead Milkmen, & any soundtrack CD (both Movie & Broadway) I own.

Anyway with looking at my music selection, one can see why I'm not so fond of the radio. Sadly the radio doesn't play many of the above artists that often or at all. Maybe that has something to say about my taste in music or maybe it has something to say about me & how I don't just follow top 40 music trends? I'll let you decide.

Hours (a rough guestimate)

Since my car stereo broke last week after eating one of my favorite Tori Amos CD's, I've been stuck listening to the crappy radio or I'm driving alone with my thoughts. While with my thoughts today, I was trying to breakdown a typical week in the life of JQHN & below are my rough guestimates.

40 hours at work (or more)
48 hours with the significant other (if I'm lucky)
15 hours driving to & from work (maybe longer if I'm not stuck in traffic)
21 hours sleeping
10 hours eating
5-6 hours taking care of the dog or trying to keep my house in order
4 hours with friends (in person ,on the phone, or chatting online)
2 hours of Yoga
0 hours writing blogs or engaging in creative activities I once thouroughly enjoyed ( I really need to work on this one)
